Understanding cranial prostheses

More than a wig. A medical solution.

The words matter — to your comfort, your confidence, and your insurance company.

What is a cranial prosthesis?

A cranial prosthesis (sometimes called a medical wig or hair prosthesis) is a custom scalp covering designed specifically for hair loss caused by a medical condition or its treatment. It's crafted to fit your exact head shape, with a breathable base gentle enough for a sensitive or treatment-tender scalp — and "cranial prosthesis" is the terminology insurance companies recognize.

Who may qualify

Cranial prostheses serve women experiencing hair loss from alopecia areata, totalis, or universalis; chemotherapy or radiation; thyroid conditions; lupus; trichotillomania; scarring hair loss; or severe stress-related shedding. If a medical condition or treatment caused your hair loss, you may be a candidate.

The prescription makes the difference

Ask your physician, dermatologist, or oncologist to write a prescription for a "cranial prosthesis" — not a "wig." That single wording change is what allows your claim to be considered as durable medical equipment. We'll guide you through exactly what to request.

How reimbursement generally works

Most claims involve three things: a prescription from your doctor, an itemized receipt (often called a superbill), and your insurer's claim form. We prepare your superbill and provide a step-by-step guide for submitting everything. Even when a plan doesn't reimburse, your prosthesis may qualify as a deductible medical expense — worth asking your tax professional about.

Coverage varies by insurance plan and diagnosis. We can't guarantee reimbursement, but we prepare every claim so you have the strongest possible case — and we walk with you through the process.

Good questions

Everything you're wondering

Do I have to be in Ohio?

Not at all. Our private studio in Englewood, Ohio is home base, and we serve Charlotte, North Carolina with dedicated appointment days. For clients elsewhere, our Prettie On Location experience brings the studio to you, and virtual consultations let us begin your design from anywhere.

Will my insurance really cover this?

Many plans reimburse cranial prostheses for medically caused hair loss when the claim includes the right paperwork — a doctor's prescription, an itemized superbill, and your insurer's claim form. We prepare the superbill and walk you through submitting your claim. Coverage varies by plan — we'll help you find out.

How do I get a prescription for a cranial prosthesis?

Ask the doctor treating your condition — your physician, dermatologist, or oncologist — to write a prescription specifically for a "cranial prosthesis." The wording matters for insurance purposes, and we'll tell you exactly what to request at your consultation.

How natural will it look?

Each strand is injected by hand into the base with our multi-needle technique, so hair emerges at natural angles with a scalp-like part. It moves, styles, and shines like your own — most people simply can't tell.

What happens at my consultation?

A private, one-on-one appointment — in studio or virtual: we listen to your story, assess color, density, and lifestyle, and design your custom piece together. No pressure, no audience — just you.
